Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team (HVMRT) experienced a surge in callouts during December and January, highlighting the vital role they play in the community, especially during inclement weather. Volunteers responded to 10 incidents, an increase compared to the same period last year.
December saw the team dedicate 128 volunteer hours assisting West Yorkshire Police with two missing person searches, both with successful outcomes. The team’s commitment was evident during the Christmas period, with volunteers responding on both Christmas and Boxing Day. On Christmas Day, they supported Oldham Mountain Rescue Team with a challenging stretcher carry near Dovestones Reservoir. Boxing Day saw them closer to home, assisting the Yorkshire Ambulance Service with a patient in urban woodland.
The post-holiday snow and ice in January kept the team busy, with over 100 volunteer hours spent assisting Yorkshire Ambulance Service in reaching patients isolated by the challenging conditions.
“While many associate us with mountain rescues, our expertise and specialized 4×4 vehicles are invaluable in urban areas during severe weather,” explained David Honour, Team Leader. “We can quickly access areas made impassable by snow and ice, ensuring vital assistance reaches those in need.”
David added, “One incident involved a report from West Yorkshire Police regarding a car that had left the road near Holme Moss. Fortunately, local officers were able to ensure the safety of the occupants before our team was deployed.”
HVMRT, which covers the southern half of West Yorkshire, recently held its 2025 volunteer recruitment day on the moors above Marsden. Nineteen candidates braved the cold and windy conditions, with ten successfully passing the selection process. They have now embarked on a rigorous 12-month training program to become fully operational team members.
The team’s vital services are made possible through public support and sponsorships. “As a charity entirely run by volunteers, we receive no government funding,” said Gemma Smith, Fundraising Officer for HVMRT. “We’re thrilled to announce a significant partnership with Wm Sykes & Son, the local estate agents. Their generous sponsorship, commencing in January 2025, is crucial to ensuring the continued provision of our essential rescue services.”
