Preparing for fire season…

This exercise enabled us to brush up on the skills that we make use of in these situations as well as helping the other agencies to practice working alongside us.

On 16th February 2024, the Holme Valley Mountain Rescue team was involved in a multiagency exercise with West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, and the National Trust (GMFRS) in preparation for the wildfire season ahead.

Holme Valley Mountain Rescue team is often called out by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service to provide mapping, communications, and safety support for moorland fires in our area. This exercise enabled us to brush up on the skills that we make use of in these situations as well as helping the other agencies to practice working alongside us.

Although it is hard to imagine given the amount of rainfall this Winter, the South Pennine moorland area soon dries out during the Spring and wildfires are common in April and May.

In 2023, we attended six wildfire related call outs.
