The Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team recently recognised commitment of its dedicated call-out team members, coinciding with the celebration of its 60th anniversary. The Mayor of West Yorkshire presented certificates to 10 exceptional volunteers who, collectively, have contributed an astounding 185 years of voluntary service to the team and the communities it serves.
Amongst those receiving special recognition was Dennis Woodhead, who alone has volunteered with the team for an incredible 35 years. Dennis joined the team in 1990 and has taken on a variety of crucial roles throughout his tenure.
Dennis has always had an interest in the outdoors and with helping people. But his joining wasn’t as a result of that. When his eldest son was at college, his son joined the team as a junior member. After taking his son to his first session with the team, rather than drive back to home and return to pick him up, Dennis stayed for the talk and has been with the team ever since.
The Mayor of West Yorkshire expressed profound gratitude to the team, stating, “You are all inspirational, and I want to say a huge thank you for everything you’ve done and continue to do twenty-four seven, 365 days a year.”
Other volunteers recognised by the Mayor for their years of service include:
10 Years: Alan Watts, Steve Hayes, Dave Malpass, Cath Kinder
15 Years: Matt Parry
20 Years: John Wood, David Honour
25 Years: Helen Shears, Mark Clarke, Owen Phillips
35 Years: Dennis Woodhead
A special supporter award was also presented to Abigale Clarke for her outstanding contributions and fantastic support at events and equipment nights.
This year marks a significant milestone for the Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team as they celebrate their 60th anniversary. The team was formed in 1965 following the tragic deaths of several young people undertaking a challenge walk in the area, highlighting the critical need for such a service.
Holme Valley Mountain Rescue is a volunteer-led charity, relying solely on generous donations from the communities it serves. The team provides vital search and rescue services across the Pennines and throughout the lower half of West Yorkshire, ensuring the safety of residents and visitors alike.
